The most important aspect of the gospel is the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It was His return to life that identified Him as the Savior who could offer eternal forgiveness and reconciliation with God to those who trust in Him. But in order to return to life, He first had to die. His death was the payment price for our justification, His resurrection the proof of purchase. Both had to be present. Both had to be true. That is why John, the author of this book, provides his eyewitness testimony here of the crucifixion. He saw with his own eyes that Jesus was dead on the cross. He had already given up His spirit, but the Romans pierced Him through the heart just to be sure. Both blood and clear fluid flowed out, something that would only happen from someone recently deceased. All hope was gone, it was final. That was what made the hope that rose on the following Sunday so glorious. We must believe in both. And there are no good reasons to doubt either. Absolute defeat gave way to ultimate victory.
