This song of David reflects a reality that he well knew, one that finds expression in many of the psalms. Adversity is a part of life. The United States has been blessed in the past few generations to not be involved in a war that presented an existential threat, and few of us have experienced war’s costs. That is a rare thing in the history of the world. But we are still surrounded by troubles. There are conflicts that we cause one another, and there is the conflict with temptation and sin that we will all experience while this world lasts. Faith in God does not make all of that go away. Instead, faith in God is the trust that He will carry us through all of it and deliver a day when it will at last be done away with. Justice will be established. Whatever enemies we face and whatever enmities we carry, they will be no more. Let us thank the Lord for the peace He has given our nation, but even more so let us thank Him for the eternal peace He will give to those who take refuge in Christ.
